The 2026 FIFA World Cup is the largest international event Houston has ever hosted. From June 11 to July 19, 2026, the tournament takes over 16 host cities across North America. Houston is one of them, and NRG Stadium is officially renamed Houston Stadium for the duration of the tournament. Seven matches will play at Houston Stadium between June 14 and July 4, including a Round of 32 fixture and a Round of 16 fixture.
If you are planning a Houston trip around the matches, this is the practical guide we wish someone had handed us. We manage 27 vacation rentals across the Houston metro, 19 of them inside Beltway 8, so we have been fielding the same questions from international visitors and traveling fan groups for months. Here is what you need to know.
The 7 matches at Houston Stadium
Only these seven matches play at Houston Stadium. Other matches across the tournament play in Dallas, Atlanta, Kansas City, Los Angeles, Miami, New York or New Jersey, and the other 9 host cities.

Where to stay in Houston for the World Cup
Hotels near NRG Stadium book out fast for events of this scale, and the closest hotel cluster is also the most expensive. Vacation rentals give you more space, a full kitchen, and meaningful savings for groups of four or more. The trade-off is location: most short-term rentals are not in the immediate stadium parking-lot footprint, so you need to know which neighborhoods are actually close.
For a curated set of group-friendly vacation rentals within 16 miles of Houston Stadium, see our dedicated World Cup 2026 Houston Vacation Rentals page. It has 19 homes inside Beltway 8 with distance pills, direct booking links, and side-by-side capacity for groups up to 20.
The neighborhoods to focus on, in order of proximity to Houston Stadium:
Medical Center and Third Ward (77004) – 4 miles to the stadium
The Texas Medical Center area is the closest STR-friendly neighborhood to Houston Stadium. You are a five-minute METRORail ride from kickoff and walking distance to Hermann Park, the Museum District, and the Houston Zoo. Quieter at night than Downtown, with more affordable nightly rates than Midtown.
Montrose (77006) – 4.6 miles to the stadium
Houston’s restaurant and bar district. If your group wants to walk to dining after matches and enjoy the city’s nightlife, Montrose is the call. Easy 12 to 18 minute rideshare to the stadium, and the METRORail Red Line is a short ride away. Our largest single-booking home (601/603 Fargo, sleeps 19) is here.
EaDo (77003) – 5.6 miles to the stadium
East Downtown is Houston’s emerging neighborhood, walkable to Daikin Park (formerly Minute Maid Park) and the Houston Dynamo’s PNC Stadium. Good base if you want to combine World Cup matches with Astros or Dynamo games.
Southwest Houston (77031) – 8.9 miles to the stadium
Quieter residential neighborhood with single-story townhomes that work well for families and small fan groups. Lower nightly rates, fenced yards, often pet-friendly. About 20 to 30 minutes by rideshare on match day depending on traffic.
Northwest Houston (77040) – 16 miles to the stadium
A bit further out, but quieter and more affordable. Good for groups that want a calmer base and do not mind the longer match-day commute. Closer to Houston Premium Outlets if shopping is part of the trip.

Getting to Houston Stadium on match day
Three realistic options. Ranked by what we recommend:
- METRORail Red Line stops at Stadium Park / Astrodome, literally steps from the venue gates. Trains run every few minutes during events. Fare is $1.25 with the METRO Q mobile app. This is the easiest path from any Med Center, Museum District, Downtown, or Midtown rental. METRO’s official site has the live schedule.
- Rideshare (Uber / Lyft) works for any property in our portfolio. Expect 15 to 35 minutes depending on neighborhood and match-day surge. Order an hour before kickoff if you do not want stress.
- Driving and parking is possible but not what we recommend. NRG Park’s official lots fill up early, and the surrounding neighborhood traffic on match day is rough. If you do drive, pre-pay parking through the official NRG Park system.
What to do in Houston between matches
Tournament schedules leave 2 to 4 days between matches at each venue. Houston is a genuinely great city to fill those days. A few ideas:
- Space Center Houston – NASA’s official visitor center, about 35 minutes south of downtown. Easy half-day trip.
- Museum District – 19 museums clustered together, several free. The Museum of Fine Arts Houston and the Houston Museum of Natural Science are both worth a stop.
- Hermann Park and the Houston Zoo – In the same Med Center area as most of our closest properties.
- Buffalo Bayou Park and Kayaking – Rent a kayak and paddle through downtown Houston for a different perspective.
- BBQ and Tex-Mex – Truth Barbeque, Killen‘s, The Pit Room, El Tiempo Cantina. Houston is a serious food city; do not skip a meal.
- Galveston Beach – 50 minutes south for a beach day if your group wants a break from the city.
- Astros or Dynamo game – Both home teams play during the World Cup window. Daikin Park (Astros) and PNC Stadium (Dynamo) are both downtown.

Booking tips for fan groups
Book direct when you can. Booking on Airbnb, VRBO, or Expedia adds platform service fees on top of the nightly rate. Booking direct through breezyvacationhomes.com routes through the same Hostaway booking widget the platforms use, but without the platform markup. The “Book direct on BVR” button on every card of our World Cup landing page goes straight to that flow.
If you have a group of 10 to 20, ask about side-by-side units. We have three properties that bundle two adjacent townhomes into one booking: 601/603 Fargo (sleeps 19), 605/607 Fargo (sleeps 20), and the 4010 Live Oak duplex (sleeps 11). Better than booking two unrelated properties because everyone is in the same building.
17 of our 19 World Cup-adjacent homes welcome dogs. Per-dog pet fee applies. No cats due to allergy policies in the homes.
Book early. Houston’s short-term-rental inventory for the tournament window has been filling steadily since FIFA announced the host cities. The closer to kickoff, the harder it gets to find a home that matches your group size, distance to the stadium, and budget.
